“A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt
We finally watched, Dirt! The Movie, a documentary about the wonders and importance of soil. It’s one of those films I believe everyone should see because what happens to our soil will eventually happen to us.
About the Film
“DIRT! The Movie, directed and produced by Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow, and narrated by Jaime Lee Curtis, brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political impact that the soil has.
The opening scenes of the film dive into the wonderment of the soil. Made from the same elements as the stars, plants and animals, and us, “dirt is very much alive.” Though, in modern industrial pursuits and clamor for both profit and natural resources, our human connection to and respect for soil has been disrupted. “Drought, climate change, even war are all directly related to the way we are treating dirt.”
Provides Hope
It’s not a “doom and gloom” documentary so you won’t have to worry about off-ing yourself after watching it. The movie provides hope for the future and demonstrates what others have accomplished when they set their minds to it. Before you expect the world to change, you must first change yourself by doing and becoming what you’d like to see in the world. Everyone can do something whether it’s on a large or small scale, every action helps.
What You Can Do
We can all plant trees, plant vegetable gardens, plant rooftop gardens, just plant anything! Try composting instead of fertilizer, or use a mulching lawn mower. Put green where there was none!
It’s important that we stop using chemicals in our soil and grow our gardens organically. Chemicals kill dirt and killing the dirt is like killing yourself. Yes, a handful of good dirt is abundant with life.
If you purchase the DVD, then you can pass it on to someone else and so on and so on…. If you rent it through Netflix, invite some friends over to watch it with you. Even these simple things will make a difference.
