Nature in a Light Bulb

Nature is a haunted house–but Art–is a house that tries to be haunted.” -Emily Dickinson, The Complete Poems

Are you a nature lover that always enjoys bringing in a little bit of the outdoors into your home? A lot of the time we bring in something like a plant that needs to be watered and needs light but how about something dead, maybe just a skeleton?

A skeleton is exactly what we have for you, leaf skeletons. While cleaning up the yard after Tropical Storm Debby, we found all these skeletons so we collected a few. If you’re not familiar with these leaf skeletons, they are what’s left after a leaf begins to decompose and what you are left with is what makes up the veins of a leaf.

The leaf skeletons can be delicate so we decided to use the good old light bulb trick to keep the skeletons behind glass. If you don’t know what we mean about the light bulb trick you should also visit, Recycle Light Bulb into Vase, to learn how to remove the parts inside the bulb.

After removing the inside parts of the light bulb you can use a nail to poke two holes in the metal rim by tapping it with a hammer. Not too hard – a few light taps should get you a hole.

Then we inserted the leaf skeletons into the bulb. You can find these skeletons underneath most layers of leaves if they have been there long enough.

After they were stuffed inside, we strung it up with some fishing line and put a rubber stopper (or cork) inside the opening of the light bulb to keep dust or whatever from getting inside.

We would have put it in a window to show you how it looks but then we would have to wash our windows. We hate doing windows! Plus, in Florida window cleaning is never ending with all the rain so we just tell people they’re opaque. Ha! okay, they aren’t that bad.

We hope you like this idea as an alternative to placing live plants inside the bulb.

Thank you! It’s a super simple idea but sometimes that’s all we need 🙂
