Rusty Rustic Art Pieces

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! The Plant Man‘s cooking ability rivals his knowledge of plants so yeah, our Turkey was awesome!

Today the topic is rustic art pieces. As you may know, I love making things out of scraps, trash and anything else that’s just lying around the house. I also can’t think about what I’m doing – I have to just do it. Sometimes thinking out a project kills my inspiration so I just start grabbing stuff that looks interesting and begin piecing it together.

I found some rustic scrap pieces of wood on the side of the road that the Plant Man couldn’t use due to it being treated wood. Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) is added to the wood as a preservative and if you didn’t know, air plants don’t do well around copper, in fact, it kills them.

To give it that old rustic feel I used rusty wire and reclaimed materials that have already been exposed to mother nature and father time. Yup, I like junk y’all! Plus it looks kind of awesome next to something new and shiny.

My Scraps Include:

  • Rusty Wire
  • Rusty Screws
  • Broken Seashells
  • Feathers
  • Leather Cord
  • Twine
  • Upholstery Tacks
  • Also “things” I don’t know the name of!
  • & Glue (E6000)

I wanted it to showcase a little bit of the natural world so that’s why I picked seashells and feathers. Nature always creates the best stuff! Plus, I always go for the seashells with big imperfections or just plain broken ones.

I selected the side of the wood that was most interesting and that usually means it had the most defects and/or wear. Then I placed objects against the wood to see what my eye liked the best.

Two of them only showcase a seashell and feathers fastened by a rusty wire and screw. I love the simplicity of those two the best. Simple, rustic and natural.

Hope you enjoyed them!

UPDATE: I’ve already made some changes to a couple of the pieces – see photos below.

Mr. da Vinci was right!

Update: I figured out what to do with our pennies!
